See, that's the thing. Your average and more casual consumer will buy anything so long as you have a good sales pitch. Why do you think phones, MP3 players and home cinema sets are being sold with bigger and bigger harddrives? Compression of music and film is only getting better after all. They buy it because something better is something bigger and/or with more functions in their view and because they're tempted into these products by ads and word of mouth.

Every new phone, MP3 player, PC I have bought has had more space then the previous product and despite any advances in compression I manage to fill them up very quickly.

That's simply because as storage capacity increases, the hardware manufacturers and music, film, useless stuff (ringtones etc) makers offer you more content. The amount of stuff available for iPhone, MP3 players and various online movie rental services and so forth has exploded in the last 3-4 years. The hardware manufacturer gets to sell you a barely improved product at a much higher price and music, movie and crap services inundate you with content and make all the more money on you as a consumer.

Its a massive win for them.
