| welshbloke said: OK so lets ask the question why does Amazon drop the price of a product by 3p. I have seen it happen on few items. I think it is fair to say that the PS3 Slim is taking pre orders and I am sure that initial supply will be limited. It just seems plain crazy. The other issue is the Amazon rankings. From what I understand they are dynamic and change passed on recent transaction so really are only good for understanding what people are buying in short window. They are not good for trends. I have tried to use them this way previously and they are simple misleading. |
I think the micro-price-drops are due to price comparison sites. If you drop the price by £0.01 that may be enough to make you the cheapest place to get a PS3, potentially resulting in more purchases.
As for your last point, Amazon is a single retailer which is VERY different from other retailers. It only sells online, so the demographics it attracts may be completely different from the market as a whole. What you said about short term windows is probably also true. Amazon rankings are a good way to find what's cheap at Amazon, btw. When they do promotions, the items quickly shoot up in the charts.
