I think you need 5 A-C grades to go to Uni, including Maths and English, atleast thats what they told me when I applied.

With me they had checked it, however I've never been good at English and I got a D for my GCSE (My worst grade as I recall). However, they said they just needed to check and they were not basing my qualification on GCSEs and so they let me on the course. I think if you get a D in either Maths or English they wont split hairs as long you get 5 A*-C's overall.
