I'd assume you're talking about 4.  If we go by what some people in this thread are saying Kojima said  he wanted 1 million first day in Japan and it wasn't even close.  Realistically, MGS4 sold almost on par with previous titles in Japan, pretty good.  There's many titles on PS3 that haven't been able to do that in Japan.

I thought the 1 million figure was worldwide?

yea actually i think you're right, although I don't think it got 1 million first day (no real way to prove it i guess).  Having said that judging any game by 1st day sales is silly.  Important thing is that the LTD is high.
