The problem is that the console generation is only so many years long, and Sony has to make it quicker and more affordable for devs to produce PS3 games. The X-box 360 uses a custom designed IBM Power PC based CPU and a custom designed ATI GPU. The original X-box, not the 360, used an off the shelf Intel CPU and even it had a custom Nvidia GPU.
