What happened between iD and Nintendo?

Nintendo wouldn't let ID put Super Mario Bros on computers.

In retrospect, that was an excellent idea, because now people have to pay 500 Wii points for it on the Virtual Console. It would've been heavily pirated as well. I can't really blame Nintendo for that.

However, during tat time, I don't see how they wouldn't let iD do that, but let Philips release horrible Zelda games on the CD-i.

After Nintendo ended the deal with Sony to develop the CD drive for their console, they worked with Philips to do the same.  As part of the deal, Philips was given character and licensing rights to the Zelda series as a form of payment.   I think the game results speak for why Nintendo never let them make the CD drive for them either.

Nintendo's relationship with 3rd parties as of right now is actually pretty damn good.   It's say it hasn't been this strong since the SNES days.

Those games were terrible. I didn't know that deal was the reason they were allowed to be made.
