I think he went to the island, found out all this stuff. Then returned to England to try and get some support to prevent an outbreak or to hide the treasure and stop the Spanish removing it. But this didn't work, so he faked his death, and his last possessions were put into it and then he went and single handedly stopped the Spanish from taking El Dorado off the island... I think
