Yes you can connect it to an HDTV, and of course it's the first HD gaming system. But it's not a console.
We had higher resolutions in arcades and computers almost a generation in advance of consoles since... pretty much always.
If you're asking why is it not mentioned in the status quo of HD gaming, well we always made distinctions between PC gaming and console gaming, as well as arcade gaming. So that's probably why.
