And Square has never done any of the actual remakes. They're farmed off to a smaller company.

Yeah, actually the two people who made the franchise what it is both agree on what their best work was: Final Fantasy IX. I do understand the game had its issues (combat is slow and lots of loading mostly cause of the PS1's crappyness), but everything else in that game was brilliant for me.
