But when MGS4 sells only 200k less than MGS3 did with huge PS2 hardware base you can't even joke that it was a bomb. And why not compare home consoles to handhelds when we are comparing game sales? So we can't compare DQIX sales to DQVIII sales because latest one was handheld game? |
That comparison isn't exactly the same thing. The Dragon Quest series has ALWAYS found it's success on home consoles, and that sent a disadvantage for the DS(though it could of went either way because we didn't have any history to compare it to unlike monster hunter). So when the DS overachieves then that is surprising and even more of a success than what would have been expected. That doesn't mean that if it sold worst it was a bomb, just that the series wasn't as popular on handhelds. Monster Hunter is in the same page, but there are three differences.
1. There has already been evidence that the Monster Hunter series doesn't sell as well on consoles, and/or when it has online fees compared to the Free Handheld versions. So it isn't speculating. It was actually quite obvious that the Wii version wouldn't sell as much as the PSP versions. For the Wii version to outsell the comparable products that were console based, and pay to play online is a success in itself.
2 Dragon Quest IX has the same priorities as the console versions. Monster Hunter 3 has different priorities than the handheld versions. The priority for the handheld versions was local multiplayer i.e Ad-Hoc. The priority for Monster Hunter 3 is online. Local Multiplayer and handhelds are much more popular than online and consoles are in Japan. This is due to people being home a lot less there than in other countries.(High School Students there are actually probably at school more than they are at home)
3 The DS has a larger userbase than the PS2 in Japan. The Wii has a considerable smaller userbase than the PSP in Japan.
