While this seems very unexpected, there is an element of this which is somewhat brilliant because there are several applications and how inexpensive it could be ... Beyond that, a lot of companies will patent things they have completed research on regardless of whether they plan to bring them to production in case they ever want to revisit the idea. Basically, having a patent on a product provides a lot of protection from patent trolls.
