Almost all dragon quest games play like the old final fantasy's to be honest. Final Fantasy is a series that changes it's basis though imo. Dragon Quest is the one that seems to keep that basis that both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest shared. Both are great series though, and I would rather one of them change than both keep the same game play. Also I don't really understand those reviews. Most of them seem to complain that it is easy and shorter because you don't have to grind. I bet if the game wasn't called Dragon Quest IX though and had the same amount of grinding as in the older games they would be bitching that it makes you grind too much. Basically people should play a game without expectations even if it is a sequel. Makes you enjoy it much more imo.
