They don't have to make it that linear even if it's a city. Yes, perception is important too, but they failed in this case, it's so easily detectable that they using invisible walls and unnatural stuff to block all off-paths.

Compare this to GTA4 or the cities in Far Cry 2. Well, maybe open world games are an unfair comparison lol. But let's say Call of Duty. CoD is very linear but still perception is better, it seems at least a little more free than the old corridor shooters.

But end of eterity is worse than anything i seen (if this video is representative).

All he's doing is walking about in a town. He didn't even bother to go into any of the shops.

I don't think this is a fair accusation.
