The question to ask ourselves is what do we consider the purpose of the justice system. Prevention? Rehabilitation? Retribution?
A large prison term definitely hits on the third, and questionably might have an effect on the former. But it definitely won't affect Rehabilitation. Of course the question may be mute since this is a very specific crime that those two people would likely never again be put in the position to commit.
But if there is an attempt to deal and treat the parents directly, it must surely be to correct their religious beliefs. And I highly doubt the United States justice system has the framework or stomache to engage in the process of treating religious beliefs as criminally reckless and institutionalizing certain people for their religious beliefs.
