The problem with Sony might be that their wallet is not infinite, since their financial situation is worse than it has been in years...
I'm guessing that they had the choice of either taking a huge hit by continuing to sell the PS3 at a loss, or using the same money to secure lots of exclusive content. They chose the first, hoping that it will increase sales enough to give 3rd parties enough confidence to support the PS3 with games (in quantity and quality).
Now that they got the ball rolling, all they can do is wait and hope the plan will work. It's all in the hands of consumers now.
