My point, today's sales only show, that ps3 cost a lot, and it don`t have yet a must have games for many people, not just Mario, Zelda and mario fans. =) And if you understimate 5 mln. FF fans, 5 mnl. MGS fans and 10 mln. GT fans.. well, then i feel sorry for you. =) |
I'll let you in on a little secret as to why today's sales matter ...
In most businesses when they're making products that won't be sold for years down the road they have applied mathematicians, statisticians or actuaries create complicated mathematical models to project the market conditions when the product will be released. In the videogame market, processing power and non-gaming features have never really made a difference in the sales of a product and are unlikely to be included in any major way into these mathematical models.
Now it is very likely that they have multiple models and the one they were using to predict the launch of the system used brand value, and current market share, to estimate initial sales and determine an appropriate level of support; price would have probably been a factor but when the initial support calculation was made they probably estimated a price of $300 or $400. Being that the PS2 was a monster, and their price esitmates may have been wrong, they provided heavy support for the PS3 initially.
Right now these same publishers are probably switching to another model and feeding the PS3, XBox 360 and Wii's sales into this model; current sales of the PS3 will not produce favourable estimates of system sales two years from now, which will impact the level of support the PS3 receives, and the PS3 may sell poorly simply because it has no games.
