It took me a while to figure out what Black Friday meant. Sure I knew about all the horrific tradgedies that have been called black friday, but never the happy go lucky shopping day.

They call it Black Friday because retailers usually operate at a slight loss during most of the year, that is, their numbers are "in the red."  On Black Friday, and for the rest of the holiday season, retailers make huge revenues and the numbers are "in the black."
