I'm not even considering 4 and 5 horror games here. In the original Resident Evils, the original Silent Hills, the Fatal Frame games, etc, you almost always have a way of completely mitigating any threat that you come across if you're good enough. Think of all the great horror movies - the Friday the 13ths, the Nightmare on Elm Streets, etc. These movies had such a scary atmosphere because, for the most part, the main characters had nothing with which to defend themselves from the terrifying threat - they were being stalked. How scary would the Scream movies have been if all the teenagers being 'chased' were armed with shotguns? Check out the atmosphere created by a Super Nintendo game simply because it doesn't give you a weapon: |
First off, Friday the 13ths, Scream and Nightmare on elm streets films are comedy horrors. Every single one of them is not scary. The main characters in those films are idiots too. If you're going to pick movies, say 6 sense, The Others, etc. I can understand that. I played games that doesn’t have weapons like Shadow of Destiny and Haunting Grounds. Shadow of Destiny was great but Haunting Grounds which is more like this new SH game was fucking stupid. It’s only a matter of time when you will get sick of running. Then they will be no fun boss fights like in the first SH. All I’m trying to say is I love the first SH game and I love motion/IR controls both of them would have been great together for melee attacks, shooting and searching play.
