Nintendo usually releases their consoles about 12 months after the competition.
If they released an HD Wii this early, the competition could just one-up the system technologically like they are doing now. However, the early release of it all could reduce the effectiveness of that.
Another however is, if the Wii is selling the most, and hasn't exhausted any separate colors (MH3 is a week away), price drops , and released its holiday titles, why cut the momentum with a new console?
It would put it in the same sales position as the PS2, becoming twice as obsolete.
