I never really thought any of the prime games were really linear, but I think that has to do with my playstyle as I remember everything new as I pass it and before i progress to said task, i go back to try to see which new upgrades i can get with whatever upgrade i acquired... instead of just doing it all at the end... It is a much slower way to play (I don't do it the second time through) but it is thoroughly more enjoyable and well just how i think metroid was designed.
