Wii is as powerful as Xbox

FIFA developer finds creative challenge

FIFA producer Tim Tschirner has said that he believes the Nintendo Wii matches up to the first Xbox in terms of power.

Tschirner's comments came in an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz's sister site, Eurogamer.net

"It's about as powerful as the original Xbox," he said. "The video hardware unfortunately is not as powerful. There's just a couple of key things that you can do on Xbox like shaders which you just cannot do on the Wii... Overall though it's pretty much what the original Xbox was."

Tschirner went on to observe that he has found the Wii "very straightforward to write code for", adding, "I think from a creative point of view it's been awesome working on this platform because there's obviously stuff we couldn't do before."

He also praised Nintendo for attempting to broaden the market with the Wii by appealing to people who don't normally play games.

"That's a bit of a philosophy that we wanted to get into this game as well - that people don't have to be afraid of finding the control scheme overwhelming or overly demanding," Tschirner explained.

"And then on the flip-side, we wanted to make sure that long-term FIFA players would find everything they love in the game still in place."

FIFA 08 is due out on Wii this autumn. To read the rest of this interview, visit Eurogamer.net.

This is what i'm talking about.  Wii does not have your normal shaders and bump mapping.  It uses TEV instead of the normal method.  Only 3rd party that been able to use that really well was factor 5.  Again this is a case in point of developer not familiar with the architecture.  with that i'm bowing out of this threat.  Theres been to many of these kind in the past and they just become fanboy vs fanboy and who has the bigger dick thread.

yup..the fact that unless the developer concentrates on a single platform their experience with what the hardware is fully capable of, their experience with development on said hardware may suffer. the Wii is very much capable of surpassing the origional XBOX for graphic's, but it would take more investment in development time because most developers did not concentrate on development with the game cube last generation outside of Nintendo. not to say that the game cube was a poor machine, far from it , last generation excludeing the PC the XBOX was the most powerful of the system console's, this Time the Wii maybe the weakest of the current 3 next generation systems, but it is quite a bit more powerful than the last generation systems.

Though Power is not what the Wii is about in my opinion, its about the Game's being fun with new way's of interaction between the software and the user and other's, and new way's to experience a game. which I think the Wii has done in spade's.

do I think the developer's will push Wii's graphic's over time, sure but the market for those type's of game's on the Wii, is far from it's major target market, that's the main negative if you can call it that of the Wii, most of the people i know including my Family who happen's to own a Wii, the graphic's are the last thing , I think the owner is worried about..that is what the PC and the PS3 and the Xbox360 are for. If you want higher graphics for console or PC game's.
