I thought the story was fine. It wasn't mind blowing, but it's about on par with any other story I've seen in most any video game.
What kills me is the people who keep complaining that there is "poor storytelling". I didn't see any poor storytelling in the game, and as somebody who's job is storytelling, I'm rather confused at the whole argument, which in every review I've seen failed to back up anything that would show poor storytelling.
Like you, I had a lot of fun with this game. I've been trying to re-play it on the higher difficulties, and it's brutal.
