Assuming people decide not to jump into the newest gen.
PS3 fans keep saying how the ps3 is the most advanced machine ever and how it's best value for money because of all it's features so if thats what matters then why would people buy a last gen console when they can buy a more powerful, feature packed machine?
The only way the PS3 would then pass the 360 is if the gap isn't too great.
I don't see how releasing a newer console will mean people will still buy older machines (apart from the Wii) in huge numbers?
The PS3 is not the PS2 and doesn't have the same stranglehold on the market to maintain high sales when the next gen starts and MS have worked very hard on brand recognition this gen and succeeded so can carry that over the way Sony did from the PS1.
Providing MS don't include too much new tech that cost a bucket load like Sony did with teh Cell and Blu-ray they could release the console at a reasonable price, maybe similary priced to the most expensive PS3 now, it's means taking a hit on each console sold but thats how this works.
