It's a very easy answer. Microsoft has much more money. The first Microsoft console didn't do very well at all. There wouldn't have been another if it weren't for the amount of money that they were willing to invest.
If Microsoft had consoles perform like the Saturn and then the Dreamcast it wouldn't be a very big deal at all. Microsoft will have a console as long as Bill Gates wants one made, regardless of how it does financially. It's really as simple as that.
