The confusion comes because people tend to use the terms UK, British Isles, Britain and England rather losely and sometimes interchangebly.

United Kingdom: properly the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

British Isles: all those islands in that region including England, Ireland and all the little islands in and out between.

Great Britain:basically the whole island that England is on, or also the UK minus Northern Ireland

England: just England and not the same as Britain/Great Britain

 

It really is uncessarily complicated but suggesting to Irish people that Ireland belongs to England will generally not be well recieved;)
