Hephaestos said: The point you're missing is that Nintendo does not need to pay for exclusives... were the games on Nintendo's consoles only Nintendo, the console would still get good sales and a bunch of the best games of the generation and be profitable (NGC is an example).... that's because Nintendo is just the best developper out there.
Now as far as RPGs go, it's true they lack a bit... but they have great titles Mario&Luigi, Earthbound, Paper Mario, Fire Emblem. This won't satisfy an RPG fanatic, but it'll satisfy players that like a varied experience.... It's hard to find a genre that is not covered by Nintendo and with a high quality game at that. |
I'm sorry I owned GameCube and Nintendo gave GameCube way more hardcore support then they are giving Wii. GameCube was a hardcore console and Nintendo was able to be profitable because of their hardcore titles. Nintendo stated they could launch Wii with only first party software and still be successful. And they could have had they kept their hardcore focus.
But Nintendo has all but abandoned the hardcore and without that base the Wii would never have gotten off the ground. It's Nintendo's fanbase that spreads the word. Nintendo's fanbase that sells the software and Nintendo's fanbase that makes Nintendo successful.
If Nintendo only released the megre line-ups they are right now they could not have survived this generation. They would need to increase their levels of software and released far more titles. Keep in mind Nintendo now only launches half a dozen first party titles a year. I remember on GameCube I bought one new first party title every month. This generation I've bought 7 first party titles when compared to the 35 I owned on GameCube!
Thats right I owned 35 first party games on GameCube and only 7 on Wii. Nintendo just isn't giving Wii the first party support they gave GameCube. Heck if it wasn't for the virtual console I wouldn't even be touching my Wii, with the exception of the Conduit (A third party title).

I don't mean to offend, but you're just being ignorant if you think Nintendo has only released seven great first-party games this generation.
Mario Galaxy Metroid Prime 3 Zelda: Twilight Princess Super Smash Bros. Brawl Punch Out!! Mario Strikers Charged Mario Kart Wii Super Paper Mario Fire Emblem Wii Sports Battallion Wars 2
Excitebots
ExciteTruck WarioWare: Smooth Moves Wario Land
Endless Ocean Animal Crossing (not for everyone, but great if you're a series fan)
Mario Super Sluggers
And that's just disc-based games off the top of my head. They've also got plenty of great first-party WiiWare stuff, including the Art Style series and Dr. Mario.
Besides, you're comparing the Gamecube's entire life span to only part of the Wii's. Upcoming stuff that we know about:
Pikmin 3 Zelda Wii Mario Galaxy 2 New Super Mario Bros. Wii Metroid: The Other M Sin & Punishment 2 Wii Sports Resort
Another Code R
Cosmic Walker
Dynamic Slash
Monado: Beginning of the World
Endless Ocean 2
Kirby Wii
That's 31 first-party titles from Nintendo (only counting the really big ones), not including their WiiWare and not including stuff we don't know about yet.
So, yeah...

Highlighted are the games I own and am interested in! So you add the four new games I'm interested in to the seven I already own and you have 11 games in 4 years, of a typical Nintendo five year life cycle that is basically the lifespan of the GameCube and I owned 35 GameCube first party titles.
Thats less then 1 3rd of the software I owned on GameCube. Compare that list to the list of GameCube first party titles four years in and you'll get my point.
And since when is WiiSportsResort a hardcore game or even Excitebots, Endless Ocean ,ExciteTruck, WarioWare: Smooth Moves. All of those are casual games maybe at best ExiteTruck and Excite bots can be considered hardcore.
The GameCube had way more good solid first party support then the Wii does or will have assuming next years E3 is like this years or last years!
