Metal Gear Solid is a long established series nobody can argue that it isn't front and center a core franchise. Specifically a core franchise for the platform. Singstar is not successful due to being a core title. It is a success due to being a casual franchise. I have personally never understood the appeal of music games, but I know they cover a massive swath of console owners. Then again I do not understand why people will get up at the break of dawn on a Sunday, and go listen to a guy talk for an hour about a book that is on their bed stand that they could read themselves.
I am not a voice in the wind here. I am just reiterating what many development suits have said on their own. Sony marketed its console as anything, but a game playing machine. Further more they have not courted the market they need in order to enjoy massive sales. The marketing is a scatter shot affair flailing about in the darkness.
I will repeat in another way what I said before. Sony needs to focus their efforts on the hardcore demographic, and while some flaunt terms like shooter box, or casual box. What exactly is the PS3 to gamers. The PS3 needs to become known for something. The console needs to develop a reputation among hardcore gamers. Otherwise it is a case of have not rather then a case of have. Now if Sony really wants to have huge first party sales it needs to bring in the demographic that will deliver.
