Rolstoppable said the PS3 sold 8M in 18months, not 18M in 1 year. I also thought the PS1 started slowly and then sought of just exploded.
anyway i think the PS3 will outsell the 360 with ease this gen, mainly because of Japan and Europe but also America, everybody says this is xbox's strongest market which it is, but the PS2 still outsold the original xbox about 3 to 1. this gen America will be about even but I would still give a slight edge to the PS3. I think wii will be a clear winner, not as clear as last gen though.
