Gerstmann was always a hack but people seem to respect him because he was martyred at GameSpot because they fired him under suspicious circumstances.  Of course, he may have seen the writing on the wall and manufactured them himself.  If you go back and read forums on some of his old reviews at GameSpot, you will see that there are many of them that gamer's in general just didn't agree with.  Not just on the Wii (although it is pretty obvious at this point he hates the Wii), but on other consoles as well.

I did not know that. Learn something new every day, I guess - but that's what I get for spouting off without being familiar with the body of someone's work.

Exactly. He was always a controversial figure, but he gained a lot of fame and respect for basically exposing the massive corruption within the industry.

 

It doesn't make him any better as a reviewer or a gamer, but it allowed him to remain a significant figure in his field
