Edit* This post is in reference to NA market since well, I live in NA. I think its just an expectation since the ps2 sold so well last generation. I think there all wrong.
Look at sales charts a year ago. The ps2 was in the lead in software and console sales. Look at it today, alot of the gamers have already moved on to the new generation. I don't see this mass exodus to the ps3 ever happening.
The 2nd reason which is tied to the first, for the ps3 winning is just because its a playstation.. However, the vast majority of gamers do not have loyalty to a certain company. Don't believe me? Why did all the Sega fans purchase playstations? The market builds upon success. Sell more consoles, get more games and gamers. Rinse repeat. When your behind a cycle (ps3 to 360) its an even steeper hill.
I think if Ps3 doesn't come out with a stunning victory in NA this Christmas it maybe to late. Anyway you look at the numbers does not look good for Sony. Compare launch numbers in NA between 360 and ps3, the 360 is selling even more now with competition. The gap grows larger.
