Sorry dude I had to double check. To reiterate the sword is centered in the middle of the screen. But you are given a little range. Your Mii will extend their arms in the direction you move the Wiimote. So he will wield the sword above his head if you move the Wiimote up. This of course opens up your Mii to a mid body attack, but will at the same time allow you to strike from above quickly.
To explain it a little further the Sword Sports mechanic is all about blocking. Wherever your sword is it will automatically block depending on where it is and how it is angled. So if you hold it horizontally above your head it will block downward strikes. By holding the B button though it does a fixed block that is easy to angle quickly.
When you attack with the sword the direction in which you swing the Wiimote will be simulated on screen. If your opponent blocks the strike you character is flung back and exposed for a counter attack.
This sport is fast paced and you swing the mote all over the place ultimately trying to knock your opponent out of the ring. However if you are careless with your swings you will be flung back so you cant mash attacks. Its another good sport.
