Given the number of bootlegs and rentals i see wouldn't be surprised if the purchasing of dvd videos falls behind illegal downloads but i haven't any proof only anecdotal evidence.
So they can make no profit and sit on the media or make some small amount of profit by allowing consumers to easily consume. It's still profit for Sony in the end since it will be on the backbone of PSN anyway.
