I'm just wondering, hypothetically speaking, if the Conduit fails to sell despite the advertising, and ends up selling on the level of say mad world....what would that mean for 3rd party developers, and wii only gamers?

if this hypothetical turns out correct then it'll have the negative effect of justifying the beliefs of 3rd party core games not selling well on wii, and this in turn would affect the wii core gamer since more developers focus there core game development into the casual direction.......the same could also happen visa versa.
It seems that allot is hinging on this game doing great, cuz anything but great sales will translate as a flop, I call it the killzone syndrome (killzone 1 great game but nor a halo killer as many thought so it failed, Killzone 2 was suppose to be CG like and although not a 100% CG like it came damn close enough that it was accepted and seen as a success)

It means I was right and that a generic FPS like The Conduit doesn't excite people enough to buy. As for developers that are not HVS. They will use it as another fodder of the "Core Games don't sell on the Wii". Honestly games already made last gen shouldn't sell. Conduit is about a 10 year old PC and an 6 year old FPS. People don't a near exact same game as they already played. They will put up with the same gameplay, but the game has to offer an experience that is different. Conduit is about an insect alien invasion. Where haven't we see that before. It just won't sell.

The Grinder for example however is different for the FPS genre. It's not as flooded and hasn't been done before. Because players haven't played it before(under a different name) it will sell better. Well there is L4D, but that's the only other game.

The Wii can overcome the third party hurdle. When a third party actually tries to make a full on core game. GTA:VC2 would probably due it. But Wii will never see it. So the Wii until the end of the generation will never see a serious effort that has a both a core, exciting, third party.

Ahem... MH3? DQX?
