I think that save systems that allow you to save whenever you want would take away some of the difficulty and tension that comes from some JRPG battle systems. The fact that Persona 3 only lets you save at certain points means you have to be careful and figure out whether you have the resources to make it to the next checkpoint. I think I prefer it that way.

What if you have something important to do and you have to leave, but you want to save immediately, without being near the check point? A save is a save.

then you leave the dungeon instantly and save.  You weren't able to make it far enough up the tower to save inside it, but you can always leave the tower and save whenever you want.

That sucks major ass. How are people supposed to progress in the game? I swear this mainly happens in linear games.

You are really on a JRPG tyrade lately without having played many at all.

You keep the levels you gained so it will be easier the next time you enter the tower, you also go back to the tower on the last floor you were able to save on, usually happen every ten floors if I remember correctly, and you can blow through the first few floors on your way back to where you were since you have already gotten the experience you need.  It isn't nearly as difficult as you seem to want to think.
