For me, it's like anything where you fill in the blanks. When moving pictures first came out, there were no actors, directors, or anything really, so the first thing they showed to demonstrate this technology was the ocean.
Remember, this was before silent films. You had a guy cranking a box with crappy still frames one after the other. There was no sound, and the timing was only as good as the guy running it.
When people would go see it, the first few rows thought they were going to get wet. It was that real to them. As movie technology advances, the ability suspend reality and place yourself in the moment goes away.
No one sees an explosion in the movies today and thinks they are in danger. Same with video games. Very few make you feel like your on an adventure, and feel more like your just controlling some guy on a screen.
