New Super Mario Bros. sales are nearing 6 million in japan. it stands at 5.66 million.
No game in the FF series have crossed the 4 million let alone the 5 million (like 14 main series games, 14 different times to try and achieve this) the Super Mario line of games has achieved the 5 million mark TWICE in only four main series games!

It's already been mentioned in this thread but Animal Crossing DS sold more than any Final Fantasy game, too. AC Wii, though, didn't even come close.
I have no idea how popular a 2D console game in 2009 is going to be, but I don't expect it to match the DS version.
