The sample size of 80 PS3s that twesterm mentioned which had a 10% failure rate in the first year is a statistically significant enough sample to say that theres a pretty good chance that the 40GB PS3s were around the 10% failure rate mark for the first years use.

Where did Twesterm mention this?  And what sources is he using?
