You heard right. MGS1 was on the PS1 so MGS2 had to use a new engine to support the jump in hardware. MGS3 was originally going to use the MGS2 engine but when it was decided that the majority of the game would take place in a Jungle-area they had to build a new engine from the ground up. MGS4 was the same reason as MGS1->MGS2's engine but I thought it would be re-used again since the engine was built to handle drastic changes in certain environments. Since we see a mix of all types of areas in MGS4. Looks like I was wrong
