While Black Sigil comes with all the basic trappings of a traditional RPG, it’s too frustrating and unoriginal to stand out.
The Good
- Likable characters and engaging story
- Charming retro aesthetic.
The Bad
- Story is very slow to start
- Encounter rate is extremely high
- Battles are occasionally frustrating.
Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled is an easy recommendation for old-school RPG fans who have put some time into any of the recent DS releases of such classic franchises as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Chrono Trigger. If you enjoy grinding away at random battles in the shoes of a reticent protagonist trying to save the world, you'll certainly have fun here. Unfortunately, it is this strict adherence to convention and lack of innovation that will turn casual fans away from Black Sigil.
Damn, I was expecting higer, and I trust Gamespot usually (yeah, I know). Need RPGFan's review to see if I try the game or not, now. Some of the things they say in the review are turning me off, specially the grinding and high encounter rate
