You'd better use Mercedes or Lexus instead of BMW in the comparison: 143CV BMW 118d does 22.2km/l average, while comparable 140CV Honda Civic 2.2 i-CDTi does a good, but worse anyway, 19.6km/l (averages calculated as set by EU regulations for vehicles homologation). And BMW engine complies with newer and stricter Euro 5 for emissions, while Honda one is still only Euro 4. Oh, yes, I'm talking about diesel engines, but latest gasoline engines still have BMW ranking better than Honda for fuel economy, excluded hybrid gasoline-electric Hondas.
