That is... so wrong.

Have you even been following the recent "Forza 3 vs Gran Turismo 5" thing? If anyone is cocky, its the definative Turn 10.

And... as stated above, PD have been working on a number of different projects in this 5 years, so how do you know that GT5 itself has taken 5 years to create?

Turn 10 stripped the game down and started from scratch and was still able to make a superior racing game to GT5 Prelude, which took the same amount of time to make. PD may have been working on a number of projects, but don't you think they could've split the teams up for that? GT5 Prelude was just a taste test for the real thing, because they couldn't finish on time. As for the timeline, I am stating a timeline from 2005 when they started the game to 2010, when GT will most likely go gold. People will be lucky to even purchase the game by Christmas. GT5 Prelude was released in 2007, so that adds up to two years. Every GT game has had added years since the creation of GT3. Look at the release dates. GT PSP was five years in the making. That game was announced in 2004 and has been talked about because of all the delays. After E3 it started recieving positive press, kind of like Alan Wake which got a bat rep because of its inability to launch on time.

First, F3 didn't start from scratch. They rebuilt the graphic engine, modeled the cars and tracks. The whole physics engine and many other stuff could be used from Forza2.

Where is your source stating PD started the development of GT5 since 2005?

In 2005 they were working on Tourist Trophy after GT4 was done. And probably also was working on GT PSP since they announced it on 2004, half a year before the PSP came out.

They released Tourist Trophy in early 2006. I guess around that time they received the PS3 development kit (the media got the first kit on Aug 2006, 3 months before the PS3 launched). AND then they started the whole next GT thing some time around mid 2006 and released the GT:HD on late 2006 as a vision/tech demo/whatever.

Other than developing GT5, they also hosted numerous GT events like GT Academy and Gran Turismo Awards, and annually for the Gran Turismo Award. They were also designing the multifunction monitor the the Nissan GT-R, co-developing the GT by Citroen, making promotional videos for Ferrari California, etc.

They were doing much more than you think. They're making the game to archieve their passion and vision, not making the game to beat the deadline and kill the competition.

OOps! Yamuchi revealed in 2008 that the GT5 took four years to make with over 150 team members. In essence the game has been in development since 2004 and so that makes it six years.
