To be fair all the Nintendo characters you named can stand on two feet as well...
I agree the Nintendo characters may be more diverse in what they are but I think the fact that they are all child friendly and cartoony makes them seem like as if htey are all from the same universe. While Sony's characters on the other hand may have fun little characters for kids like the sakcboy and Ratchet & Clank while other characters are more serious and mature like Kratos and killzone characters then others are more realistic like nathan Drake. They are all humanoids but that is just the appearance, there is more to a character than it's cover.
I also like the idea of a Kingdom Hearts game. That would be cool. But I think both can work. Kingdom Hearts and Smash brothers would in essence be completely opposite and could both be used as crossover games. One is meant for single players while others is meant for co-op play. RPG fans can get familiar with Ratchet and Drake who they may not have cared about before while fighting game fans can get familiar with some RPG characters and others. I think a game that incourages people to play together would achieve more of the goal of character awareness and increasing brand value. But kingdom hearts would still be a cool game to play seperate from that objective.
