I've heard that Apple's contract with AT&T was a five-year deal. So you might have to wait three more years.
I think tying itself to specific providers was a good move by Apple for breaking into the phone market, but now it's holding back adoption of the iPhone, and I think Apple knows that. If they can buy out the contract early, they might try to break free and spread their wings.
