Well, it's ATB system is also faster than VI, VII, and VIII as well.

RPG's, point and click adventures, and other games like those are the lucky few where gameplay isn't the most important thing.  Good gameplay is a great bonus but the most important thing of games like these are the story, characters, and music. 

FFIX does great on all three of those fronts.

A little bit tangent, but FFVI is my favorite game ever and I freely admit it has terrible and broken gameplay.

I agree. I absolutely love Final Fantasy IX.
