I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that no one cares about HD-DVD nor Blu-Ray in those places? Hence making the only people who have one of these formats being most likely a PS3 owner?

It has 91% market in Japan specifically, and HDTV adoption is much higher there than it is in the States. Blu-Ray was released in Japan long before HD DVD was even finished, though in cartridge form:

The substantial lead Blu-Ray holds in Japan is the key reason why I think Blu-Ray will prevail in the format war.


The Japanese movie industry is way less important than its video game counterpart, so I don't think the situation there will have much influence on the overall outcome of the format war. Blu-ray does have an advantage in the data storage sector though (HD DVD burners do not seem to be even available yet).
