What I was meaning was, Gamecube = Wii. Wiimote = potential Gamecube accessory. They also have a history of releasing many iterations of the same console.

Sorry, I have never accepted that premise. The upgrade from GCN-> Wii, whiile not as significant as PS2 -> PS3, is significant nonetheless. Add in the change in interface, storage medium, and internet access, and it is at least as different from the GameCube as the DS was from the Game Boy SP.

DS -> DSi is about the same. The differences are extremely minor technically in the hardware. The Wiis design may very well have been an existing GC slim design with a few changes. The Wiimote itself was designed initially for the gamecube as an accessory. Its the same hardware essentially used in a different way. To the consumer however it is completely different because of the whole package which Nintendo presented them.

@FinalFan: We should not condone prejudice between our console and handheld brethren. We must treat them as equals.

A successful strategy in the home console space is not necessarily a successful strategy in the handheld space, and there needs to be a consideration that a company may use one strategy in one market and not in the other ...

Most households have a potential use for multiples of the same handheld gaming system but very few have a use for multiples of a home gaming system. Creating an upgraded handheld system often ends up convincing someone to buy a new system and they often give their current system to someone who is a less dedicated gamer. The end result is a worse attach rate because people are quite often sharing games, but (overall) more games sold and much better profits.
