DS -> DSi is about the same. The differences are extremely minor technically in the hardware. The Wiis design may very well have been an existing GC slim design with a few changes. The Wiimote itself was designed initially for the gamecube as an accessory. Its the same hardware essentially used in a different way. To the consumer however it is completely different because of the whole package which Nintendo presented them.
