While I agree that it would be awesome to have that, I think we are indeed very far off from this technology being implemented into games at a reasonable cost. If an RPG would give you an option like this for every NPC you meet, I think it will cost many millions too much to implement for more than a handful of games.
I can imagine Microsoft letting Rare or Lionhead go crazy with it, and let them create an experience which makes people buy an Xbox, but I don't think that it will happen a lot otherwise.
