In this interview, they specifically allay fears that the game will become too actiony and not adventury enough. They also speak of where it will fit into continuity, and state that the game is basically Metroid 3.5 (thus explains some of what happened between Super and Fusion). The story is apparently going to be closer to Fusion, and the game will explain what happened to Adam, and the "other Samus" (the blond-haired woman that Samus addresses in the trailer) is apparently very important to the story.

The game will also explain more of Samus's backstory, and the black guy in the helmet is supposed to be a Federation soldier of some sort.

Certainly makes me more confident. These are parts of the old Fusion and Super Metroid team working closely on this, after all.
