The truth is that Nintendo does win.
Look at the sales. Look at the profits.
However, the people who are most likely to comment on video games -- males 18-34 -- is the exact demographic that the PS3 and Xbox 360 go after most while Nintendo treats is equally to virtually every other demographic.
Thus, your Internet posters, your TV commentators on G4, your sales clerks at Gamestop and Best Buy, all feel much more drawn to the PS3 and Xbox 360 than they do the Wii. After all, there are games on the Wii for children and seniors and females -- to the males 18-34, such software is a waste of resources that could better go into developing more FPS and TPS and AcAd (action adventure) games.
Thus, Nintendo gets the hate. But they are on track to get the normal amount of games purchased per system during a lifetime -- 8 to 12. Which is remarkable given that so many people seem to report that they are only in nursing homes or closets. (Its current attach rate is also roughly equivalent to the PS3 but behind the Xbox 360 which is a software monster. It should be noted that the PS3 has similar issues of people buying it for limited gaming because its Bluray capabilities. But since this is a high end technology, the males 18-34 see it as cool).
In closing, Nintendo can do no right in the eyes of certain people -- males 18-34, a certain stock analyst, a few technology magazine critics, etc. But it does a lot right in the arena where it most counts, which is why it has survived for so long.

If Nintendo is doing so much wrong, why are Microsoft and Sony trying to add motion. And before someone says it is an option, Microsoft wants to make Halo playable with its motion, which is much farther than Nintendo dares to go.
I am Mario.I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. Wii Friend Code: 1624 6601 1126 1492 NNID: Mike_INTV |
